The Sinhala support for the Government's military campaign continues to
be strong whilst their support for peace talks has dropped to 16.6%
according to the results of the March 2008 Peace Confidence Index
survey (PCI).

| Army Chief denies any military debacle |
Army Chief, Sarath Fonseka refuted claims made by particular groups
that the Muhamalai battle was a debacle. A battle, he said is no
cakewalk. The defence ministry quoting the Army Chief said even an ordinary
infantryman knew the casualties suffered were nowhere near what could
be termed a military debacle.

| Govt. says no to Madhu Church as zone of peace |
The government has rejected a request by the catholic community that
the historic Madhu Shrine in Mannar be declared a zone of peace. Speaking to 'Lanka Dissent', a senior military official said the
refusal has come after defence authorities requested the President that
the church should not be allowed to fall into the hands of the LTTE yet

| Sri Lanka lost 185 soldiers in Jaffna battle: military sources |
At least 165 government soldiers were killed and 20 more went missing
in a major battle against Tamil rebels this week, military sources told
AFP on Friday. The figures were far higher than official defence ministry casualties
which gave 43 soldiers dead and 33 missing from Wednesday's fighting in
the north.

Tamil rebels killed at least 100 Sri Lankan soldiers in the nation's
bloodiest battle in 18 months on Wednesday, the separatists said, as
the military claimed more than 100 rebels died in the fighting.

| Sri Lanka air raid kills girl |
Sri Lankan warplanes bombed rebel-held territory in the north of the
island for a third consecutive day on Thursday, and the Tamil Tigers
said a teenage girl had been killed in the air raids. Fighting between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the military
has intensified since the government formally pulled out of a
six-year-old ceasefire pact in January, though a renewed civil war has
been raging since 2006.

| Gurkhas to protect top politicians? |
The government is considering getting down Gurkha soldiers from India
to beef up the security of top political leaders who face grave threats
to their lives, reports said. A proposal in this regard has already been made to the Ministry of
Defence, and it will be taken up at government level in due course.

The LTTE has conducted its fifth air bombing of a Sri Lanka military
installation, whereas,the Sri Lanka Air Force has been unable to,
intercept the Tiger aircraft. On April 25th, two LTTE light aircraft of the type Zlin Z-143L, took
off from Mullaitivu, around 1.25 a.m., in total darkness and flew at a
low level.

| Flying Tigers stage fresh attack as Sri Lanka fighting escalates |
Tiger rebels using light aircraft bombed military targets in
northeastern Sri Lanka early Sunday as security forces launched a fresh
ground offensive after a deadly bus bombing, officials said. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) hit two military
installations in the Weli Oya region, where security forces launched a
new drive against the rebels on Saturday, a top security source said.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said the Sri Lankan army
had taken the Catholic church in Madhu in the north west, where the
fighting was now concentrated, without facing any resistance.

| Sri Lanka jets bomb rebels a day after deadly battle |
Sri Lankan planes bombed rebel positions on Thursday, a day after
dozens of Tamil Tiger fighters and government troops were killed in one
of the bloodiest battles in 25 years of civil war. The army said it killed over 100 rebels in fighting around the northern
Jaffna Peninsula on Wednesday, but also admitted 43 government troops
were killed and 33 missing in action.
