Ever since I wrote a news analysis on the second battle to capture
Muhamallai titled “Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Are They Really?” many
things have changed. Firstly, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE) have given up conventional war fare in the eastern theater and
reverted to guerilla warfare. This was perceived by many as a victory
for the Sri Lanka Army (SLA)

| Sri Lanka jets bomb rebels a day after deadly battle |
Sri Lankan planes bombed rebel positions on Thursday, a day after
dozens of Tamil Tiger fighters and government troops were killed in one
of the bloodiest battles in 25 years of civil war. The army said it killed over 100 rebels in fighting around the northern
Jaffna Peninsula on Wednesday, but also admitted 43 government troops
were killed and 33 missing in action.

EPS - Elephant pass, known for its impregnable defences comprising
sophisticated chain linked plexi glass blended by natural defences fell
to the offensive LTTE ceaseless waves III formations on the 21st of
April 2000. Since then Tamil Tigers have flooded into the Jaffna
peninsula.

| LTTE will 'never be defeated' |
The Tamil Tigers say they will 'never be defeated' despite Sri Lankan authorities vowing to wipe them out within months. Head of LTTE political wing, P Nadesan, told the BBC that the LTTE has
experienced similar statements during their 30-year old struggle
against Sri Lankan state.

| Critical northern crossing point under pressure |
The Omanthai crossing point 190km north of the Sri Lankan capital,
Colombo, is the only gateway currently open between areas controlled by
the Sri Lankan government and those controlled by the Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and traffic through this key transit point falls
off sharply each time the security situation deteriorates.

| UN body condemns Sri Lankan airstrike on VoT |
The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has condemned the
air strike on the Voice of Tigers radio station that killed five of the
station’s staff. A total of more than ten people are reported to have
been killed in the attack.

| SLA launches artillery barrage in Northern FDL |
Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna has launched a barrage of artillery
shells Sunday early morning into Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE)
territory across the Northern Forward Defence Line of the Tigers. The
artillery barrage continued for more than 4 hours.

| Army Chief denies any military debacle |
Army Chief, Sarath Fonseka refuted claims made by particular groups
that the Muhamalai battle was a debacle. A battle, he said is no
cakewalk. The defence ministry quoting the Army Chief said even an ordinary
infantryman knew the casualties suffered were nowhere near what could
be termed a military debacle.

| SLA forces Vanni patients to switch ambulances in Oamanthai |
A recent Claymore attack carried out by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep
Penetration Unit (DPU) at Mudkompan, Pooneryn, that seriously injured
the driver of the Mulangkaavil hospital ambulance has resulted in the
SLA introducing new regulations limiting the transport of patients by
ambulance from Vanni only up to Omanthai.

| Defiant Tigers cling to last bastion |
Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels are maintaining a defiant stance, in
spite of the government's recent announcement that it had driven them
