| Critical northern crossing point under pressure |
The Omanthai crossing point 190km north of the Sri Lankan capital,
Colombo, is the only gateway currently open between areas controlled by
the Sri Lankan government and those controlled by the Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and traffic through this key transit point falls
off sharply each time the security situation deteriorates.

| DPU soldier killed along LTTE Defence Line |
A soldier belonging to Sri Lanka Army's (SLA's) Deep Penetration Unit
(DPU) was killed Sunday noon at Paalamoaddai, and unknown number of
soliders injured during a clash along Liberation Tigers Forward Defence
Line (FDL) in Vavuniyaa-Mannaar border, LTTE field officials told
media. The DPU team withdrew, leaving behind soldier's body and a T56-2
rifle.

| Five passengers wounded in Sri Lanka blast |
At least five bus passengers, including a soldier, were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in Sri Lanka's northern Vavuniya district on Friday, officials said. Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels set off the mine at Cheddikulam as the civilian bus passed the area, military officials said.

| Court halts expulsion of Tamils |
Sri Lanka's Supreme Court has ordered the authorities to immediately halt any further evictions of minority Tamils from the capital, Colombo. Hundreds of Tamils were expelled from the city on Thursday by the government.

| Sri Lanka says rebels derail train |
Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels blew up part of a rail track, derailing a train in Sri Lanka's east on Wednesday and injuring four people, the military said, a day before Japan's peace envoy was due to visit the district. Yasushi Akashi arrived on Tuesday for a five-day visit to try and find ways to jumpstart a battered peace process which has descended into renewed war. An estimated 4,500 people have been killed since last year alone.

| Kiriella says 156 soldiers were killed in Vavuniya clash |
Head of the UNP media unit parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella reveals that he has been informed through a very reliable source that 156 soldiers have died in the clashes in Vavuniya and Omanthai during the past few days. He said that 95 of the bodies were scheduled to be handed over to the ICRC this evening. He said the LTTE has taken away 2 army tanks and destroyed weapons and ammunition as much as ten container trucks.

| Tigers destroy SLA artillery launchpad in Vavuniyaa, 20 SLA troopers killed, 40 wounded |
Liberation Tigers launched a commando raid Saturday night into Vavuniya Mannar border villages where the SLA had recently advanced its Forward Defence Line, LTTE Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan said. The Tigers have destroyed a SLA artillery launchpad, seized military hardware including Buffel Armoured Personnel Carriers and established their FDL positions in Mu'l'likku'lam and Vi'laththikku'lam, Mr. Ilanthiryan said. Meanwhile, informed military sources in Vavuniyaa said 10 SLA troopers were killed, more than 35 wounded, an ammunition dump was destroyed in Pampaimadu, and that the Tigers have seized a big haul of weapons in their raid Saturday night. Fighting is still continuing.

| SLA forces Vanni patients to switch ambulances in Oamanthai |
A recent Claymore attack carried out by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep
Penetration Unit (DPU) at Mudkompan, Pooneryn, that seriously injured
the driver of the Mulangkaavil hospital ambulance has resulted in the
SLA introducing new regulations limiting the transport of patients by
ambulance from Vanni only up to Omanthai.

| Vavuniya battle: Sri Lanka military says 28 soldiers missing or dead |
The Sri Lankan military today said that at least 28 soldiers are listed as killed or missing due to the recent battles with Tigers in North of Madhu in Vavuniya. Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said “28 government troops were dead or missing in action and 52 wounded during heavy fighting in Vavuniya that began at the weekend.”

| Fighting in northern Sri Lanka kills 5 combatants |
Two Sri Lankan Red Cross workers abducted from the capital have been found dead with gun shot wounds to the head, as heavy fighting between soldiers and Tamil rebels killed 10 soldiers, the aid group and military said Sunday. The bodies of the two ethnic Tamil men were found Saturday in Ratnapura district, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Colombo, Red Cross Director General Neville Nanayakkara said.

| Artillery duel in Vavuniyaa, SLA suffers casualties |
A key artillery launch pad of the Sri Lanka Army in Vavuniyaa, at Pampaimadu, 13 km southwest of Oamanthai has come under the artillery fire by the Tigers Saturday night, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sources in Vavuniyaa said. Both the SLA and the LTTE were locked in a heavy artillery duel. SLA has suffered casualties at their artillery base, initial reports said.

| Sri Lanka: ICRC personnel return to crossing points |
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has decided that its personnel will resume their presence at Omanthai and Uyilankulam crossing points, in Vavuniya and Mannar districts respectively, for three days a week effective today. The decision was announced in Colombo by Toon Vandenhove, the ICRC’s head of delegation. The organization had withdrawn from the crossing points on 22 May for security reasons.
